Morton - Homer C. Ludwig, 95, of Morton, died at 1:28 a.m. Saturday, July10, 2010, at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton.
He was born October 16, 1914, in Merrimac, Monroe County, Ill., to William P. and Lillie (Meyer) Ludwig. He married Mary Ellen Turner on March 18, 1947, in Quincy. She preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1998. He was also preceded in death by one son, Thomas S. Ludwig and one brother.
Surviving are two sons, Charles T. (Annette Scalzo) Ludwig of Auburn, Ala., James D. (Sandra Stone) Ludwig of Havana, Ill.; one daughter, Judith A. (Gerry) Malzone of St. Charles, Mo.; six granddaughters, Michelle, Kristina, Crystal, Tiffany, Jennifer and Stacey; and two great-grandsons, Carter and Owen.
Homer was an Army Air Force veteran. He was a major in World War II in the medical corp. He and his team took over The Breaker’s Hotel in Palm Beach, Fla. and converted it into a rehabilitation center. He was instrumental in setting up the receiving hospital in The Azores for veterans that were injured from the European theatre and needing rehabilitation.
He was a graduate of Hohenschuh-Carpenter College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo. Homer was licensed as a funeral director in 1938.
He was the former owner and director of Ludwig Mortuary in Morton from 1947 until retiring in 1990.
Homer was a member of the American Legion Post 318 and VFW Post 5281, both in Morton and was a service officer for both since 1954. He was president of Morton Optimists Club and 15-year chairman of Boy Scout Troop 85 in Morton.
He was a member of National Funeral Directors Association and IL Funeral Directors Association, of which he was a past regional director.
Homer was also past president of the Morton Chamber of Commerce and member Masonic Lodge 352 AF & AM and the Peoria Commandery #3, Peoria Mohammed Shrine, Royal Arch Masons Chapter #25, Morton O.E.S. Chapter #25 and Kennel Lake Sportsman’s Club in Morton.
He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morton.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at Ludwig Mortuary, with Apostolic Christian ministers officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Ludwig Mortuary in Morton. Burial will be in Roberts Cemetery in Morton.
